Morning sickness is a normal part of the first trimester of pregnancy and can extend up to the first half of the second trimester. It is not only about vomiting. Many women with morning sickness do not have episodes of vomiting. The main symptoms of morning sickness is intense nausea that is usually the worst in the morning upon waking. It may ease within the first half of the day or persist throughout the day. Some women never experience morning sickness in pregnancy. But when it does occur, the nausea and vomiting if present can really upset normal life.
As a pregnant woman you need to eat, and eat well in order to nourish the growing fetus and sustain your own body during this stressful time. But how do you have an appetite and keep anything down with morning sickness?
Sip Water Slowly
If the nausea is intense and you really do not want to eat, try sipping on water. It can be soothing and you may find that ice water is better tolerated. Water also helps to wash out the acidic stomach contents from your mouth and esophagus which may have come up when you vomited. Sip the water slowly and if you can tolerate it then add an oral rehydrating powder which has electrolytes and glucose. It can sustain you for a few hours until your appetite returns.
Nibble on Bland Crackers
Bland crackers are not an old wives tale. Most women find that by nibbling on crackers they are able to get some nutrition and the nausea subsides slightly. Do not opt for the wholewheat crackers as this can be a bit nauseating. If you have to, nibble on the crackers slowly even while you are in bed. Take a few small bites at a time, chew and swallow. If the cracker is not making the morning sickness worse then continue nibbling on as much of the cracker as possible.
Eat Properly When You Can
When you appetite kicks in and the nausea has subsided, make sure that you well. Do not overeat as it can trigger nausea and even lead to vomiting but do not undereat as well. If you have just overcome a bout of morning sickness then moderate just how much you eat. Start off with a quarter of what you eat and if the nausea does not start again within 20 to 30 minutes, then you can eat more. Try to stick to foods that are less likely to nauseate you. A bland meal is usually better tolerated. Eat slowly and drink plenty of water during or after your meal.
Sleep If You Cannot Get Moving
If the morning sickness is very intense and you do not have to get out of bed, then sleep in and relax. You may find that your morning sickness passes after a short nap or even just lying still in bed. Also take note of how many pillows make you comfortable. While you should no sleep on more than one pillow at night, you can rest on 2 to 3 pillows while lying awake in bed and nod off for a few winks. But take care of the position if you are sleeping. An awkward position can give you a stiff neck with neck pain and even trigger a headache.
